Notes on Love

Valentine’s Day was just the other day, and I have kept promising myself that I would write a story about love, yet I kept on postponing it. It seems that writing on love is not as easy as someone might think. It’s like an inflated balloon, you don’t want to touch it lest you prick it and burst it. Because no one knows much about love anyways. Trust me, we know much less about it than we think. However, that does not reduce our capacity to love.

If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

Love is patient and kind. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

13 Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13

I see all of the evil and greed in the world, the ache and the pain, the suffering and the hurt that humanity goes through, and I cant help but think that we lack only one thing-Love. Our planet would be a much more beautiful place for all of us, if each person made a choice to love a little more and a little harder. ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself’- is the one command that can heal this world.

Mandela said ‘Love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite. If people can be taught to hate, then they can also learn to love.’ Truer words have never been said. But why do we find it hard to love other people? Why is our world still replete with selfishness and greed? Why do we still hurt each other? Even in our highly civilized generation, nations still rise against each other, parents abandon their children and friends betray one another. Have our hearts grown so cold as not to value our fellow human beings? Maybe we have forgotten what makes us truly human – It is not the money we have, nor the cars we drive, neither the degrees we earn – what makes us truly human is how we treat fellow human beings.

Love gives us the strength to pull through tough situations. Knowing that someone has got your back –be it your parent, or a friend or your partner- makes you fearless in the face of danger. And if you have found the one, the love of your life, hold on strong to them. Never take them for granted, lest you lose sight of the stars while staring at the clouds. Love like it’s all that you have got- because in the end, in the very end, it is not the things that you gained but the memories that you made that will really count. Never miss a chance to remind someone how much you love them, remembering that one of these days it might be too late to tell them so. Love has a language. Whether it is that phone call early in the morning, the random text in the middle of the day, or that bouquet of flowers in the evening- don’t let your love be silent. Show it.

Make a choice to show more love from today. Many people we meet on a daily basis are hurting in the inside, and you could be the one to brighten their day. Greet someone with a smile, ask them how their day was and wish them all the best. It begins with you and I. And when the world has known enough love, when we love each other more, the world will know peace, and our children will find a better place to live in.

For every beauty there is an eye somewhere to see it. For every truth there is an ear somewhere to hear it. For every love there is a heart somewhere to receive it” -Ivan Panin
